The study of what teachers know, believe and think has in the last 15 years become a key area of language education research. In this talk, Prof. Dr. Simon Borg will trace the emergence of this area of activity and illustrate it with reference to his recent work on teachers' conceptions of learner autonomy. He was formerly Professor of TESOL at the School of Education at the University of Leeds and has been involved in TESOL for 25 years, working as a teacher, teacher educator, lecturer, examiner and researcher in several ELT contexts around the world. His talk is brought to you by the 'ELT Research Group' to start this semester's series on issues surrounding the research of English Language Teaching.
