Discovering Texas’ Botanical Heritage

Barney Lipscomb (Fort Worth, Texas): Botanical exploration of Texas essentially began in the early 1800s; it is a 200-year love affair with plants, and is truly a story of great adventures, of extraordinary discoveries, of brave and heroic men and women. The talk takes you back to not only the pioneer days when several hundred men and women of science labored in Texas, but also to the men and women who were at the front of botanical discovery in Texas in the 20th century. Discover and learn about the greatest Texas explorers who documented the magnificent Texas’ botanical heritage. In the end, we will look to the 21st century and identify areas of Texas in need of further exploration, either because of poor coverage or because remaining areas of natural habitat are in imminent danger of disappearing. This program is presented in a visually exciting auditorium lecture style format and resonates with voices from the past. It is sure to delight everyone: farmers, ranchers, teachers, students, homeowners, gardeners, horticulturists, florists, botanists, history buffs, and anyone with a curiosity in the beautiful Texas flora.
