From July 13 to 17, 2026, the University of Graz will host the 14th European Conference on Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ECMTB 2026).
This prestigious international event is a joint meeting of the European Society for Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ESMTB) and the US-based Society for Mathematical Biology (SMB). With around 1,300 participants - at least half from overseas (including America, Asia, and Australia) - it is the world’s leading forum at the intersection of mathematics and the life sciences, significantly enhancing the international visibility of Styria as a center of scientific excellence.
The main goal of the conference is to use advanced mathematical models to better understand complex biological processes. By analyzing large datasets - from genomics to the spread of infectious diseases - the conference aims to generate insights that directly impact drug development, personalized medicine, and epidemiological forecasting. ECMTB 2026 thus addresses key challenges in modern research and is highly relevant for industry partners in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. The conference is deeply rooted in the local ecosystem and is supported by outstanding networks such as BioTechMed-Graz, NAWI Graz, and the Field of Excellence COLIBRI. Hosting this major European-American event further trengthens Styria’s international reputation as a leading location for science and business.
A special focus is placed on supporting young talent: around 400 PhD students and postdocs are expected, making the conference an important platform for early-career researchers.
