Before studying
Non-degree programme students are not normally enrolled in a study programme, but they are assigned a registration number and are entitled to register for and attend courses. This status is usually granted to those who do not yet have the necessary prerequisites for a degree programme (e.g. individuals completing the pre-course programme or a university training course). Tuition fees must generally be paid by non-degree programme students.
An admission process is required before enrolment for some courses at the University of Graz. This process includes registering in the application tool on time, paying a contribution towards the costs of each study programme, and in most cases, completing an online self-assessment. An admission examination may also be required at the secondary stage. Each admission process takes place just once per academic year, and a secondary school leaving examination will not be required to participate. It is then possible to enrol for a study programme in the winter or summer semester with a study placement as well as with the general higher education qualification exam. Prospective international students must also submit an application for allocation of a study placement.
Prospective students must first prove their aptitude for becoming a teacher before starting a teacher training programme with the South-East Development Network. The steps involved are as follows:
- On-time registration
- Payment of cost contribution
- Completion of online self-assessment
- Participation in computer-based admissions test
Once the student passes the admissions process (and potentially also the additional aptitude tests for certain teaching subjects), they may enrol on the teacher training programme in the winter or summer semester. The admission process takes place once per academic year. International students must also submit an application for allocation of a study placement.
Anyone interested in programmes subject to specific access requirements must register for the admission process using the application tool. Note: this step does not mean that a student is actually enrolled in the study programme! Prospective international students must also pre-register online and apply.
A student’s physical aptitude is examined before they are able to study sport (bachelor’s, master’s and teaching subjects). Students must register for a motor skills supplementary examination before the start of the winter and summer semesters for this purpose.
Prior knowledge of Biology, Latin or Greek is required before starting some Bachelor's programmes. The precise timing is also stated in the curriculum. The student’s examination certificate and school leaving examination certificate must be provided as evidence of this. A supplementary examination must be taken if the subjects were not covered to the appropriate extent at school (Latin and Greek 10 hours per week in the sixth form respectively; Biology or Biology combined with other subjects 4 hours per week in the sixth form). The supplementary examination for Latin and Greek can be taken directly at the University after completing a two-semester course. However, the examination may also be taken with external providers (subject to a fee) or at a school.
Matriculation refers to the initial enrolment at a university. Once a student matriculates, they will receive a student ID card and registration number as their student ID.
Signing up for a study programme is known as enrolment. International students should contact the International Students Office here at the Office of Academic Affairs. Students enrol and re-register every semester, normally automatically by paying the Austrian National Union of Students fee or the Austrian National Union of Students fee and tuition fees.
Anyone wishing to enrol in a study programme at the University of Graz for the first time must pre-register online. Fill in your personal data and the desired course of study and upload your documents.
Students in English Studies / American Studies, or in the teaching subject English, must complete a computer-based language grading test (target B2) at the start of the study programme. They must pass this in order to progress in the study programme.
Students starting Romance Studies, Slavic languages, Transcultural Communication, or the teaching subjects Bosnian/Croat/Serbian, French, Italian, Russian, Slovenian and Spanish, must provide one-time evidence demonstrating they meet the language level required. Language courses are offered by treffpunkt sprachen to those students who do not reach the required level or who already know that they require better preparation before the examination.
