With 4 million information carriers, the University Library is one of the largest cultural and educational institutions in Styria. It is a library with universal standards, scientific orientation and public mission for the whole region. It increasingly regards itself as a “hybrid library” which, in the sense of sustainable development, not only acquires analogue and digital media, but also manages, archives, analyses and makes them accessible.
A new lecture room with seating for up to 430 people, a spectacular glass cube that seems to hover above the historical reading room, workspace for 650 users, a 125 year old façade revealed: by early summer 2019, the university library will be transformed, offering modern functions. Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft (BIG) and the University of Graz are spending around 27.6 million Euros on completely renovating the university’s centre of knowledge. Library services will still be provided during the renovation phase, although there will be changes to the borrowing and interlibrary loan services, to opening times and to media access.
