Our knowledge society makes great demands on higher education. On the one hand, universities are supposed to  fulfil their traditional civilising function and provide high-quality adacemic education, on the other hand, they have to react to the increased access to higher education and to the academisation of a growing number of professional areas. In the field of teaching, university development must be geared towards employability, which is at the centre of the Bologna process, and towards providing a wider range of educational opportunities to meet the requirements of life-long learning.
