With around 4 million information media items, the University Library is one of the biggest cultural and educational institutions in Styria and the third largest library in Austria. It is a truly universal library with an academic focus and a public service mission for the whole region. Increasingly, it sees itself as a “hybrid library” which, with a view to sustainable development, acquires, manages, archives, prepares and provides both analogue and digital media.
As well as access to its stock – in digital and hardcopy form – the Library also provides research advice, various courses and a publication service.
A new lecture hall with up to 430 seats, a spectacular glass cube which seems to float above the historic lecture theatre, 650 user workstations and the restoration to its original state of the 125-year-old facade: by the early summer of 2019, the University Library in Graz will have a completely new look and modern facilities. The Austrian Federal Property Association (BIG) and the University of Graz are spending 27.6 million euros on a total revamp of the central knowledge bank. The library will remain open throughout the renovation work. However, there will be some changes to the lending and interlibrary lending service, opening hours and access to media.
