As a student, until your 24th birthday you are entitled to family allowance. To obtain this, you must provide the tax office with certain certificates of achievement. You are entitled for the statutory minimum duration of studies plus a tolerance semester per stage for diploma programmes or one academic year for programmes that are not split into stages (Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes).
You may change your programme of study twice without forfeiting the family allowance. However, you must switch before the third semester of enrolment at the latest.
The study grant is a government educational grant for students. The eligibility requirements are “social eligibility” and “favourable academic achievements”. The amount of the grant is based on a number of factors.
The study grant is also only paid for a certain period: in the case of Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes, the statutory minimum duration of studies plus a tolerance semester and for diploma programmes plus a tolerance semester per stage of the programme. Again, you will need to provide certain certificates of achievement.
