Admission to degree programmes
If you would like to start a degree programme at the University of Graz as an international student, you must apply to the Office of Academic Affairs for admission.
International students are all students who apply with education documents obtained outside Austria. This therefore means all
- EU/EEA nationals
- Third-country nationals
- Austrian nationals
with a foreign university entrance qualification (school leaving certificate or certificate of completion of studies).
For admission to a programme of study at the University of Graz, international students submit an Application for a study placement with all the necessary documents. The documents are either presented in person or sent by post to the University of Graz Office of Academic Affairs.
The teaching language at the University of Graz is German. From the 2019 summer term, Level A2 German skills (according to the GERS scale) must be demonstrated when the application is made. To then be admitted to a degree programme, German skills at level C1 (according to GERS) are required. Bear in mind that only certain language certificates are accepted. These must be submitted when applying.
If your documents are complete, you can demonstrate German skills to level C1 and no further admission or supplementary examinations are necessary, you can be enrolled directly for a degree programme.
If you are not yet able to demonstrate the required knowledge of German or have to pass additional supplementary examinations, you cannot be immediately admitted to a programme. The university offers the option of sitting the supplementary examinations as part of the Pre-Course Programme of Graz Universities and Tertiary Institutions (VGUH). Until you pass the supplementary examinations, you have the status of a non-degree programme student.
Please be aware that, for courses subject to specific access rules, you must also register for the admission process and successfully complete this in order to be admitted to the programme.
