The Welcome Center is happy to help international prospective students with any questions on applying to the University of Graz or requirements for entry to Austria. It also provides information and services during your stay in Graz.
If you have not obtained your university entrance exam in Austria, you are considered an international student. Your citizenship is not the criteria for that. For admission to a study programme at the University of Graz as an international student, you need to submit an application with all the necessary documents via the online pre-registration. Your application will be checked by the university and you will receive an answer.
The teaching language of many study programmes at the University of Graz is German. As a prerequisite for admission to a degree programme, you need to provide proof of German language skills at CEFR level C1. At the time of application you must already be able to provide evidence of German language skills at CEFR level A2.
Citizens of EU and EEA countries or Switzerland do not need a visa or residence permit to stay in Austria – only a valid passport or national identity card.
Citizens of third countries, however, need to apply for a visa (maximum stay 6 months) or a residence permit (for stays longer than 6 months).
International students are required to have valid health insurance for Austria. EU/EEA nationals can use the health insurance from their country of origin under certain circumstances also in Austria. If this is not the case, then under certain circumstances it is possible to arrange discounted health insurance for students. International students from non-EU/EEA countries must have an insurance covering all risks in Austria for the residence permit.
Once you have arrived in Graz, there are a few things to organise. These include, for example, registering your place of residence, opening a bank account, and organising a mobile phone and internet provider. In Graz one of the best ways to get around is by bike, since it is the quickest and simplest form of transport for trips within the city.
