Molecular Enzymology and Physiology
The focus of research on the topic of “Molecular Enzymology and Physiology” is the clarification of the molecular mechanisms of the energy metabolism and fat metabolism, the investigation of neuro-degenerative conditions within the framework of research on Ageing as well as molecular bacteriology and infection biology.
Researchers focusing on “Molecular Enzymology and Physiology” coordinate internationally attractive largescale research projects and post-graduate education programmes, such as the special research area of LIPOTOX funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the GOLD project as part of the Austrian genome research programme GEN-AU and the FWF doctoral college on “Molecular Enzymology”.
In addition, numerous scientists participate in national research networks, the FWF doctoral college on “Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases”, the Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology (ACIB) and projects under the 7th EU Framework Programme. Publications in high-profile journals such as Science, Nature, Molecular Cell and Cell Metabolism confirm the excellent scientific achievements.
Enzymology and Physiology also play prominent roles within NAWI Graz, the strategic co-operation of the Karl-Franzens-University and the Graz University of Technology in the field of the Natural Sciences.
The establishment of a research focus on “Molecular Enzymology and Physiology” is therefore only a consequential development of the successful scientific branch that has got a highly modern research facility with the Centre for Molecular Bio-Sciences (ZMB) completed in 2007.
