Language changes through society - and society, in turn, is shaped through language. The change can first be observed in cities, which is why they are of particular interest to me in my research. In a current project, I and my team are investigating the variants spoken in Graz and Vienna. In both cities, one notices a tendency towards a balance between standard and dialect through all strata. In addition, strong equalization processes between the centers and the surrounding areas can also be observed. Similar developments can be observed in most metropolises around the globe.
