Zerstörung der Zellen: neue Erkenntnisse im Kampf gegen Typ-I-Diabetes

Gabriele Schoiswohl forscht im MIDAS-Projekt von BioTechMed-Graz am Institut für Pharmazeutische Wissenschaften der Universität Graz. Sie geht der Frage nach, warum die Typ-I-Diabetes-Beta-Zellen zerstört werden und damit die Insulin Produktion in der Bauchspeicheldrüse eingestellt wird.

„Wir untersuchen, was sich in den Beta-Zellen sowie im Blut tut, wenn zwar ein leicht erhöhter Blutzuckerwert vorhanden ist, aber man noch nicht an Diabetes erkrankt ist“, erklärt die Biochemikerin. Ihre Arbeitsgruppe will herausfinden, wann die Veränderung in den Beta-Zellen einsetzt und welchen Einfluss andere Faktoren wie Fettzellen haben.
Erste Hinweise, so Schoiswohl, deuten darauf hin, dass vorangegangene Prozesse im Organismus bzw. im Blut ausschlaggebend sein könnten. Welche genau das sind, ist derzeit Gegenstand weiterer Forschungen. Ist dieses Rätsel geklärt, könnten rechtzeitig Therapien entwickelt werden, um den Ausbruch der Krankheit zu verhindern oder zu verzögern.

Minister Eva-Maria Holzleitner visits the University of Graz

Eva-Maria Holzleitner, the Federal Minister for Women, Science and Research, visited the University of Graz on 11 November with great interest and in a very good atmosphere. Her discussions with Rector Peter Riedler, members of the Rectorate and students focused on current challenges in the area of university funding, the training of elementary school teachers and issues relating to the organisation of teacher training courses.

Bio-plastics and baroque theatre: Awards for two researchers from the University of Graz

Chemist Katalin Barta Weissert received this year's "Forschungspreis des Landes Steiermark", while Germanist Christian Neuhuber received the "Erzherzog-Johann-Forschungspreis". The awards are endowed with 12,000 euros each and are presented for outstanding achievements in the field of science and research. Provincial Councillor Willibald Ehrenhöfer presented the awards on 7 November 2025 in the White Hall of Graz Castle.
