On the weekend after Easter, the Botanical Garden and the campus meadow at the University of Graz will once again be transformed into a huge rarities fair. Hundred exhibitors offer plants and seeds as well as edibles, selected handicrafts and garden utensils.

The rise of "gut feelings" in US political rhetoric

Analysis of eight million political speeches reveals: never before have members of the US Congress based their rhetoric more strongly on personal convictions – and less on facts. Researchers from the Cluster of Excellence "The Politics of Inequality" at the University of Konstanz in cooperation with researchers of the University of Graz observed a decline in the use of evidence-based rhetoric by US politicians from both political parties since the 1970s.

From Rio to Graz: law student Lara Ferraz on a multicultural campus

"There are more international students at the University of Graz than at my home universities in Rio de Janeiro and Recife," enthuses Lara Ferraz about the multicultural campus life. And what other differences between Brazil and Austria does she notice? “The weather is a lot colder here,” grins the law student. The teaching, on the other hand, is more similar than she expected.

When the Styrian capital was occupied by the Red Army on 9 May 1945, fear and uncertainty mingled with relief at the end of the war for the majority of the population. The British had actually been expected. They took over eleven weeks later. Although the time under Soviet occupation was short-lived, it left deep traces in the collective memory and in personal life stories. Based on archive documents and interviews with contemporary witnesses, historian Barbara Stelzl-Marx describes the everyday life of the people in the first weeks after the war in her new book "Roter Stern über Graz" in a well-founded and detailed manner.
