Riegersburg,
an imposing fortress standing 1600 ft. high atop a former vulcano in Eastern Styria, is home to a large exhibition documenting
the family history of the Princes of Liechtenstein which also, formed to a great part the history of the Habsburg Monarchy.
This rocky peak has been inhabited since 4000 B.C., whereas the oldest parts of the structure date back to 1100 A.D. In ist
present form, credited to Elisabeth Baroness Galler (1600 - 1672) and encompassing 1,9 miles of fortified walls, seven portals
and eleven buttresses, the fortress was rendered impregnable against all enemies including the Turks and the Hungarians. On
the interior the two outstanding rooms to note are the magnificent Renaissance Knights' Hall and the Baroque White Hall. The
fortress has been the property of the Liechtenstein family since 1822 and represents in many respects the apex of medieval
fortifications in Central Europe.
