Mites or Acari represent the species richest arachnid group with approximately 40 000 described species. Acarological research has a long tradition in Graz: soil mites are studied since the beginning of the seventies of the last century. In the focus of interest are functional morphology, systematics and phylogeny, ecology and zoogeography.

Chemical Ecology deals with the chemical interactions among organisms, and includes topics such as communication and defense by pheromones and allomones but also the search for novel biologically active natural products such as antibiotics or cell-active substances.
The exploratory focus of the Chemical Ecology in Graz lies on the defence glands of both oribatid mites and harvestmen. Apart from phylogenetic studies using histological and chemical data, the biological properties and functions of secretions are examined.

The scientific work of the research group is reflected in lectures and courses, publications in international journals, in the organisation of meetings, and in granted research projects.
