Analytical Facilities

1. Bruker Pioneer S4 XRF

The S4 PIONEER - a compact wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (WDXRF) serves geological applications at the Institute of Earth Sciences. Routinely 33 major and trace elements are analysed in glass beads using a calibration of ca. 40 international refernece materials. Sample preparation: 1 gramm of powdered and dried rock sample is mixed with 7 gramm of lithiumtetraborate and fused the the semiautomatic fusion machine VAA-2M at ca. 1300°C. We are participation in the GeoPT proficience testing rounds.

2. Perkin Elmer AAS 5100

Selected trace elements are determined in mainly aqueous samples with the atomic absorption spectrometer.

3. New Wave UP213 Laser ablation unit with Agilent ICP-MS (Institute of Chemistry)

A New Wave UP213 Laser ablation unit was purchased together with the Institute of Chemistry and is operated with a Agilent ICP-MS 7500 at the Institute of Chemistry. Spot analysis (25 or 40 microns spot size) of light elements (Li, Be, B) as well as trace and rare earth elements are determined routinely in single minerals in thinsections.

4. Hydrothermal experimental Lab

A rapid quench hydrothermal lab is being set up. Temperatures of up to 850°C at max. 2 kbar are possible. The special rapid quench set up allows to heat and cool the samples within seconds. It is planned to investigate the solubility of metals in multicomponent systems as well as kinetics of reactions and
and growth rates of minerals in carbonate systems.

5. Geochemistry Lab

A geochemistry lab with a ultrapure water facility (Millipore), teflon bombs for determination of REE in whole rocks (analysed at the Institute of Chemistry with an Agilent ICP-MS 7500) as well as several furnaces with temperatures up to 1800°C are available.
