Classification of Arthonia
With more than 500 species, Arthonia represents the largest genus of the Arthoniomycetes. The genus is diverse in ecology and life-style encompassing  lichenized, lichen-parasitic, moss-parasitic, and saprobic species. Species occur in habitats as diverse as ranging from the Atacama desert to living leaf surfaces in perhumid tropical rainforests. Both the infrageneric relationships of Arthonia and the delimitation of the genus are still poorly understood. This work concentrates primarily on traditional taxonomy.
Lichens of Crete

Crete, perhaps the cradle of European culture, has a varied lichen vegetation. Humidity by western winds influence the lichen diversity in woody patches of the Western part and displays otherwise rare oceanic species. Elsewhere strong degradation of the vegetation throughout the island limits the richness of corticolous lichens, but provides geologically varied substrates for rock- and soil-inhabiting species. Here is a survey of species diversity.
