Müssen wir bei unseren Entscheidungen, die wir heute treffen, wirklich an Menschen denken, die noch gar nicht geboren sind? Und wie können wir über die Zukunft nachdenken, wo sie doch noch gar nicht da ist?

A Muse of Fire. Intuitions and Thought Experiments

Zum Inhalt: The lecture will start with a brief account of thought experiments in science and philosophy. Then the focus will turn to Daniel C. Dennett and Stephen P. Stich, two influential critics whose views will be critically discussed. Dennett claims they are unreliable "intuition pumps," and Stich claims they are biased by gender and culture. Some attempt will be made to defend thought experiments from these charges.
Zur Person: James Robert Brown is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto. His interests include foundational issues in mathematics and physics, thought experiments, and science & society. His most recent book is: Platonism, Naturalism, and Mathematical Knowledge, Routledge. Earlier books include: Who Rules? An Opinionated Guide to the Epistemology and Politics of the Science Wars, Harvard, Smoke and Mirrors: How Science Reflects Reality, Routledge, new editions of The Laboratory of the Mind: Thought Experiments in the Natural Sciences, Routledge, Philosophy of Mathematics: An Introduction to the World of Proofs and Pictures, Routledge. His forthcoming books are on philosophy of science, foundations of seismology, and a history of aether theories. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a fellow of Leopoldina Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften.
