Short Curriculum Vitae
Renate Ortlieb has been a Full Professor of Human Resource Management at the University of Graz, Austria, since 2009.
She completed her doctoral thesis on employee sickness absences in 2002 and her „habilitation” in 2009 at Freie
Universität Berlin. After graduation in Business Administration and Economics at the Technische Universität Berlin in
1995 she worked as a research and teaching assistant at the universities of Konstanz, Essen, Flensburg and at Freie Universitaet Berlin.
She was an Assistant Professor at Freie Universitaet Berlin, a visiting lecturer at the Berlin School of Economics, Fern-Universitaet
in Hagen, the Institute of Electronic Business Berlin and the Hamburg Media School and an interim Full Professor at the University Konstanz.
Renate Ortlieb's publications appeared in journals such as Journal of the Royal Statistical Society – Applied Statistics, Management Revue,
Schmalenbach Business Review, International Journal of Human Resource Management, and Feminist Economics.
Her research interests are in human resource strategies, especially with a focus on migrant employees,
the interplay of firm’s internationalization strategies with human resource strategies, especially with a focus on South Eastern Europe,
gender and power relations in organizations, employee absenteeism, and empirical methods of management research.

Almina Bešić has been a Research Assistant at the Department of Human Resource Management of the University of Graz since 2010.
In the years 2008 to 2010, she worked as a student assistant at the Department of International Management and the Department
of Human Resource Management of the University of Graz. She received her master degree in Business Administrations as well
as her bachelor degree in Business Administrations from the University of Graz.
Besides that, she studied in 2003/2004 at the University of Bihac, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Peter Derfler has been a Research and Teaching Assistant at the Department of Human Resource Management
of the University of Graz since 2009. In the years 2007 to 2009, he worked as a project-coordinator
for „Compass Sozial- und Gesundheitsverein” on the EU-project „Free Movements and Equal Living
Opportunities for All - LivingAll”. He received his master degree in Business Administrations as
well as his bachelor degrees in Business Administrations and Sociology from the University of Graz.
Apart from that, he did a year abroad in 2004/05 at Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, USA.

Christian Hirt currently holds the position of a senior lecturer at the Department of Human Resource Management,
University of Graz, Austria. He graduated from the same university with a PhD (Doctor of Social Sciences and Economics)
and his dissertation dealt with trends of change in Japanese personnel management. Work experience as executive assistant
and office manager; shareholder in business start-up and food export with a main focus on Japan; coordinator for International
Relations within the Japanese Exchange and Teaching Programme in Japan; as well as assistant professor at the Institute of
International Management, University of Graz. Coordination and collaboration in several international projects,
trainer for cross-cultural cooperation and communication in the private sector, academic advisor for incoming students at
the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences, member of the advisory board for international relations at the University of Graz.
He gives lectures on general management, HRM, cross-cultural management, management of complex systems and globalization.
His main research interests and publications focus on international human resource management and cross-cultural topics.
