Welcome to SysMus08!
Dear friends and colleagues,
It is our great pleasure to invite you to attend the First International Conference of Students of Systematic Musicology – a conference for students by students in the field of systematic musicology. This two-day event will provide an ideal forum for advanced students in systematic musicology to present and discuss their research. We also extend a warm welcome to researchers and supervisors who are interested in meeting and supporting the next generation of researchers in the field.
Systematic musicology involves diverse epistemologies and methodologies from the sciences and the humanities. The scientific side is primarily empirical and data-oriented; it involves empirical psychology and sociology, acoustics, physiology, neurosciences, cognitive sciences, and computing and technology. The humanities side of systematic musicology involves disciplines and paradigms such as philosophical aesthetics, theoretical sociology, semiotics, hermeneutics, music criticism, and cultural and gender studies.
The conference aims to promote systematic musicology and its disciplines in the long term by supporting advanced students and the next generation of scholars.
SysMus offers
practice giving conference presentations (oral, poster)
feedback from people with different backgrounds (including other supervisors)
practice with the English language (if that is not their native language)
Our conference is also an excellent opportunity for students, their supervisors and other researchers to meet international colleagues.
We are looking forward to meeting you in Graz, at what promises to be a most stimulating and enjoyable event!
Manuela M. Marin, conference director
