RAAS Biennial Conference, Remapping Urban Spaces: American Challenges,

The Conference will take place in October 4-6, 2012, at Ovidius Univcersity Constanta  and it is organized by the Romanian Association for American Studies, the Faculty of Letters and the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission, Bucharest.

The topic of the conference aims at reflecting the current debates on the contemporary city in the context of the developments that take place within urban studies in the United States at a time when the economic, the social, the political and the cultural tend to intersect and thrive in the metropolis rather than anywhere else. Therefore this conference represents an invitation to (re)investigate and (re)analyze issues connected to the city as well as broader acceptations of urban spaces and identities from an interdisciplinary perspective (literary studies, geography, sociology, psychology, anthropology, history, cultural studies, political science, film studies, institutions and other associated fields).

The organizors decided to give another chance to those who did not manage to meet the deadline, therefore it is extending to May 1, 2012. You may find the CALL FOR PAPERS and the REGISTRATION FORM here. Updates will be posted at http://www.raas.ro/conferences.

Inter-Generational, Interdisciplinary and Intercultural Bridges

International Conference of the LSP Unit which is organized by the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi, Romania will tak place from  11-12 May 2012 in Iasi.

Globalization has been hailed as a sign of technical progress and economic development. In recent times, the other side of globalization – its discontents – has become increasingly obvious. Global challenges preclude simple answers; the complexity of global phenomena, of global crises and of global threats requires dialogue, the rebirth of public virtues and the commitment to care for our fellows and the environment in which we live.

2012 is the European year of active aging and intergenerational solidarity. The purpose of our 5th year conference is the framework for a three-tired dialogue: between generations, between disciplines and between cultures, on topics such as:

- knowledge vs. wisdom: a youth/aged dichotomy?;
- challenges of inter-generational education;
- inter-disciplinarity, interculturality, inter-temporality;
- cultural approaches to the aging phenomenon;
- intergenerational dialogue and the creation of public virtues;
- business education and the training of socially responsible graduates;
- age and seniority in business communication;
- representations of inter-generational and intercultural dialogue in literature and the media;
- public virtues in the classroom, in institutions and in companies;
- the foreign language class: opportunities for inter-generational, intercultural and interdisciplinary dialogue.

ENAS publication opportunities in The Gerontologist

The Gerontologist, which is one of the official journals of the Gerontological Society of America, currently accepts manuscripts from scholars from the humanities and arts. The GSA publications committee has been convinced that having humanities and arts work included in the main gerontology journal was essential in order to move the field forward. By having work by humanities and arts scholars available to readers from all sub-disciplines within aging, rather than limited to only those in the humanities and arts, would provide an important forum for new ideas and ways of considering older age. An associate editor (Helen Kivnik) and editorial board (Ruth Ray, Ron Mannheimer, Kate de Medeiros and Debra Sheets) have been appointed specifically dedicated to the humanities and arts. The Gerontologist has an impact rating of 2.0, and was listed as the 6th most cited journal in gerontology.

See also an editorial written by Helen Kivnik and Gerontologist editor Rachel Pruchno, which describes their commitment to the humanities and arts.

For more information on submissions see: http://www.oxfordjournals.org/our_journals/geront/for_authors/

Submissions should sent to the attention of Helen Kivnik, Associate Editor for the Humanities and Arts, who will insure that they are reviewed by appropriate Humanities and Arts reviewers.

Entity and Identity in Bioethics, Paris International Conference

Ars Identitatis encourages interdisciplinary debates, that is why we are inviting anyone who could contribute to this debate (Professors, Researchers, Journalists, NGO activists, Lawyers, Clerics, etc.). Submissions from graduate students are also encouraged.

The progress of genetics has strengthened the relation between body and identity at such an extent that a number of researchers have argued that DNA can be considered today what traditional religions and philosophical conceptions understood by one’s soul (Nelkin, Lindee). Moreover, the research on artificial life (alife) brings a new light on a posthuman age of a life-as-it-could be and influences the values adopted by contemporary societies. New communication and entertainment technology supports this ideal. In a world dominated by the ideas of securing the comfort of the individual and of the perfection of the human being, minority categories of disabled persons seem threatened by a large majority of normal persons. Award winning films as Breaking the Waves (von Trier 1996), The Sea Inside (Amenabar, 2004) and Million Dollar Baby (Eastwood, 2004) have contributed to the idea that certain impairments reduce the person to a mere entity. Stereotypical norms of beauty usually diminish the importance of the sexual attractiveness of disabled people, and bring individuals that suffer from genetically transmissible diseases not to wish to have offspring. The possibility of choosing the sex or the sexual orientation of the child before birth, or the abortions made with the purpose of preventing children with various impairments being born, raise questions on the identity of the entities that are destroyed or preserved and on the different mentalities regarding life, identity and the concept of person in the contemporary world.

In response to such contemporary innovations more traditionalist points of view assert a wider identity that comprises the development and self-fulfilment of the person from the moment of her conception until the moment of her death, and sometimes even beyond death. Some of them even go further by associating current practices with evil and revert to more traditionalistic forms of medicine or simply to prayers in order to heal someone from curable or incurable diseases, to help infertile couples give birth to offspring, to perform ritualistic surgeries on the human body (in order to confer a certain identity to it) etc. Among these practices, some are considered dangerous for the identity of the person on which they are performed, as for example female circumcision.

The purpose of this conference is twofold: firstly, to engage researchers with different cultural, political, philosophical, religious backgrounds in a debate on the close relation between entity and identity in bioethics and secondly, to obtain a better theoretical understanding of the identities of those that engage in bioethical debates (for instance, in what degree one’s belonging to a Muslim, Christian Protestant, Orthodox, Catholic, Buddhist or Black community etc influences his/her arguments for or against some practices or affects her interest in certain issues).

The International Conference will take place at Ecole Polytechnique, Paris from 23 to 24 April 2012 at and it is organized by Ars Identitatis Cultural Research Association.

The proceedings will be published (after peer review): some in paperback format, the others in electronic format.

We accept both Panel proposals and Individual abstracts. Individual abstracts should be of no more than 450 words in length. Those who intend to send individual abstracts are kindly requested to submit also a short bio note.
The person who submits a panel proposal is kindly requested to send us a short Curriculum Vitae (one page) together with a presentation of the panel and the abstracts. The other panelists should send only a short bio-note. Each panel proposal should contain at least two abstracts.

The deadline for sending abstracts is February 10 but we encourage early submissions, in order to allow the selection commission to have enough time for deliberation.

We will acknowledge receipt of your abstract. In case you don’t receive any reply from us after 3 days, please resend your abstract.

Ars Identitatis is an independent non-profit association. We are making efforts to keep as low as possible the logistics costs related to the conference and to the publication production process.

Please send your materials and address your enquiries to Ms. Silvia Stoica (President of Ars Identitatis) Mr. Ionut Untea (PhD candidate, Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes) and Ms. Andrada Maran (Ecole Polytechnique) at registration[at]identitatis.org

The Transatlantic Dialogue on Higher Education:
An Analysis of Cultural Narratives

Ulla Kriebernegg

2011, 186 Pages
ISBN 978-3-8325-2696-2
Price: 44.00 €

Comparing apples and oranges frequently, this is what we do when we talk about similarities and differences regarding higher education in the United States and Europe. Based on the assumption that higher education policy texts are cultural texts to be interpreted, this book deconstructs four US American cultural narratives within higher education (coopetition, the frontier myth, McDonaldization, and the narrative of security), and compares these to discourses prevailing in Europe. Disputing the prevalent claim that both the recent European higher education transformation initiative, the Bologna Process, and the establishment of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) have had absolutely no impact on US institutions of higher learning, this study proves that cultural narratives in the last decade have strongly determined political and structural developments in higher education on both sides of the Atlantic. This book therefore adds another facet to the transatlantic dialogue on higher education by providing a cultural critical perspective, including the Foucauldian theory of governmentality as well as aspects of postcolonial theory.

Comparative American Studies: An International Journal

Special Issue: Hemispheric Approaches to Native American Studies

The editors of an upcoming special edition of the interdisciplinary journal Comparative American Studies invite contributions (between 5,000 and 7,000 words) that illustrate this new hemispheric approach to indigenous studies. We welcome essays from the pre-Columbian era to the present that deal with issues such as artistic exchange, (neo)colonialism, identity, resistance, environmentalism, border-crossing, and new disciplinary forms. We are primarily interested in comparative work that highlights continuity and conflict across North, Central, South America, and the Caribbean, as well as the indigenous nations established before the European arrival.

54 INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF AMERICANISTS / 54 Congreso Internacional de Americanistas
"Building Dialogues in the Americas" / "Construyendo Diálogos en las Américas"

Americanist scholarship is marked by a vibrant diversity of ontological, epistemological, and methodological questions. Since its inception, Americanists have gathered at ICA meetings to discuss empirical and normative scholarship, liberal and conservative politics, positivist and post-positivist perspectives, as well as activists and theoretical approaches, among other things. While these specializations often have been artificially separated, we aim to facilitate sharing of insights, questions, methods and viewpoints that could foster dynamic dialogues.
