Philosophische Gesellschaft

The Philosophische Gesellschaft was set up in 1951 with the goal of introducing philosophical topics to a broader public and to raise interest in those topics through organizing regular evening lectures. In the last years two interdisciplinary and international symposia were organized, i.e., „Philosophy as a Form of Life“ 2006, and „Illusion of Autonomy? 2008“.
Vereinigung für wissenschaftliche Grundlagenforschung
(Chair: Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Johann C. Marek)
This society was set up on 8 October 1964 with the purpose of conducting interdisciplinary and theoretical work on fundamental problems in various areas of science and stimulating contact between interested scientists. This is being done by a) organizing conferences, lectures workshops and seminars, b) bringing forward related publications, c) establishing research projects, d) supporting future professionals. Contacts with other universities have been intensified by inviting foreign researchers as well as former graduates who are now persuing their academic careers aborad and return continually to give lectures or to participate in workshops and colloquia. Since 2005 the following colloquia have taken place: “What Does Art Do?” (2005); „Richtig oder Falsch – Über Wertungen in der Kunst und Ästhetik“ (2006); „Ästhetische Erfahrung und Kunstrezeption“ (2007).
Research and Documentation Center for Austrian Philosophy

Austrian Center of Philosophy with Children and Youth
The Austrian Center of Philosophy with Children was set up in 1985 to promote research in philosophy with children and to advance the field in theory and practice. The ACPC runs the Institute of Philosophy with Children. A major catalyst for the institute has been the "Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children" (IAPC) at Montclair State University in New Jersey, USA. The Austrian Karl-Jaspers Society was started up in Graz in 1987. Its main activity is the edition of a Yearbook, a periodical that has continually been pubished since 1987. Jaspers researchers from all across the world have contributed to the yearbook. Thus, the Philosophy Department of Graz has become a special place concerning the research on Karl Jaspers. Austrian Karl Popper Foundation
The Austrian Karl Popper Foundation was established at the Philosophy Department of Graz in 1997 to do research on the philosophy of critical rationalism. Throughout the years a number of symposia have been organized. Outstanding Popper researchers like Joseph Agassi, Hans Albert, and David Miller have participated in those symposia. The Austrian Society of Phenomenology
focuses on phenomenology and is interested in the cooperation with psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, sociologists and pedagogues. One of the topics is the reciprocal relationship between phenomenology and hermeneutics. Since 2009 Sonja Rinofner-Kreidl has chaired the society, Harald A. Wiltsche has been general secretary, and Eva Schwarz treasurer. By means of regular publications and the organization of symposia phenomenological research is to be stimulated and strengthened. In the autumn of 2009 Steven Crowell (Rice University, USA) gave a lecture at a symposium that was organized by the society.
Austrian Philosophical Society
From 1 January 2005 until 31 December 2008 the Austrian Philosophical Society was presided by Wolfgang Gombocz. Christian Hiebaum (Dept. Of Legal Philosophy) was general secretary. The presidents of the society are appointed to a four-year term. On 1 January 2009 Elisabeth Nemeth (Vienna) became president. While the headquarters of the society were located in Graz, the following activities took place: The society`s 8th Congress was titled "Brains and Persons With a Main Focus on Austrian Philosophy”. The Austrian Ludwig Wittgenstein Society was established in 1984 and is located in Kirchberg/Wechsel, Lower Austria.
