The main library, with about 1.3 million volumes) offers excellent working conditions and the borrowing of books is free. However, it is not an 'open shelf' library, i.e. you cannot browse through the books. You have to order the books you want and after about an hour you can collect them at the desk. The loan period is 30 days but can be extended.

In addition to the main library, some departments have their own libraries where you can actually browse and also borrow books (normally for a shorter period of time than at the main library). You can, of course, also make use of the Library of the Province of Styria (Landesbibliothek) in town. Also, due to the vicinity of Vienna, the library resources of Austria's capital (National Library, University Library, City Library) are within relatively easy reach (2 hours and 30 minutes by train).

In order to have access to the main library you need to get an ID code (bar code). Bring along the following documents:

• passport photo
• confirmation of the host institute regarding the duration of your stay
• identity card
• “Meldezettel” (registration form)

Graz University has four big computer labs: The GEWI-lab in the Wall Zentrum (Merangasse 70) can be used only by students of the humanities. The three EDV-Zentrum labs (one in the main university building, one in the Wall Zentrum and one in the RESOWI building on campus) are open to all students and staff of Graz University.

You can apply for an email account for guests by filling in the relevant application form. Have your head of department sign the form and send it to computing services (ZID). Once you are provided with a username and password you can set up your account in the office. For further information or requests contact the ZID-helpdesk (ext: 2240).

The Student Union (ÖH) runs a campus store which is located in Schuberstraße 6a. Apart from books, scripts, and the possibility to print and copy it also offers a variety of university items, such as specially designed university clothes (T-shirts, sweaters, baseball caps) and gift articles.

The "Universitätssportinstitut" (USI) offers well over a hundred different courses (from aerobics to yoga) at a very low price. These courses are very popular and we highly recommend them.
