PREPARING YOUR STAY

HOUSING

Depending on your mobility program you will have to make the arrangements as follows:

  • Erasmus, SEN/UN, CEEPUS and Go Styria students - Housing for is managed by the housing office of the Austrian.
    Exchange Service (OeAD)
  • All other programs (Joint Study, ISEP, MAUI, AEN, bilateral agreements Novi Sad, Belgrad)  – you will be contacted by the IRO Graz concerning the housing arrangements. Note that IRO Graz does not arrange private accommodation but only dorm rooms.

The deadline for housing applications is 1 June (stay starting in winter semester) or 1 November (stay starting in  summer semester) the latest. The earlier you sent your housing application, the better your chances! Note that all dorms in Graz are co-ed.

Depending on your program you will be informed by the OeAD Office (Erasmus students) or the Office of International Relations about your housing and payment arrangements once placements are complete. Make sure you make all the necessary payments in time as otherwise your placement cannot be guaranteed and your room will be allocated to somebody else!

RESIDENCE STATUS (ANMELDEBESCHEINIGUNG/VISA/RESIDENCE PERMIT)

  • EU/EAA citizens can enter with just a valid passport and then need to register with the provincial government if staying for more than 3 months ("Anmeldebescheinigung").
  • NON-EU/EAA citizens nominated for 1 semester - stay of up to 6 months (except Japanese citizens) need to apply for a visa D via the Austrian embassy in their home country before departing for Austria. Visas cannot be applied for or extended in Austria! Please contact the Austrian embassy in your country of residence for more information. You will receive an acceptance and a visa confirmation letter that covers some of the documentation needed for your visa application as soon as your complete application has arrived in our office via surface mail.
  • NON-EU/EAA citizens nominated for 2 semesters need a residence permit for their stay in Graz.
    • Citizens of the USA, Australia, Canada, etc. (for a complete list check http://www.oead.at/index.php?id=574&L=1) can enter Austria with a valid passport and then apply for the residence permit in Graz. Check with the Austrian embassy in your country of residence which documentation you will need for your application in Graz and make sure you take it along when coming to Graz.
    • Citizens of all other countries need to apply for the residence permit via the Austrian embassy in their country of residence. Note that the process can take up to three months and make sure you contact the Austrian embassy right away to start the application process. You will receive an acceptance and a residence permit letter that covers some of the documentation needed for your residence permit application as soon as your complete application has arrived in our office via surface mail.

Make sure you contact the Austrian embassy concerning your visa or residence permit application and any questions you might have in relation to travel plans within Europe during your stay at the University of Graz. Make sure you are aware of the rights and limitations in context with travel within the Schengen area and Austria.

COURSE SELECTION

In the context of the online application you are asked to include the courses you would like to take during your stay in Graz. Note that this does not constitute an online registration, but that registration takes place during welcome events in February (for summer semester) and September (for winter semester) with the support of academic supervisors. We will also provide a session dealing with the UniGrazOnline system so you can start your registration well prepared.

GERMAN INTENSIVE COURSE

The University of Graz offers an Intensive German course before the beginning of each semester (Sept/Feb) in order for exchange students to brush up their language knowledge before the start of the semester. Courses are offered at all levels and last three weeks (Mo-Fr 9-12.30). Participation is highly recommended for those of you who have little to now German, so please make sure you register!

PLANNING YOUR TRIP - ARRIVAL IN GRAZ

Your designated arrival time will depend on whether or not you participate in the intensive German course prior to the beginning of the semester. Note that participation in one of the “Welcome Weeks” is mandatory for all exchange students.

WINTER SEMESTER - for students participating in the German course:

  • Arrival: before 2 September 2012
  • mandatory “Welcome Week” starting 4 September 2012.

WINTER SEMESTER - for students NOT participating in the German course:

  • Arrival: before 17 September 2012
  • mandatory “Welcome Week” starting 17 September 2012.

SUMMER SEMESTER - for students participating in the German course:

  • Arrival: before 7 February 2013
  • mandatory “Welcome Week” starting 7 February 2013.

SUMMER SEMESTER - for students NOT participating in the German course:

  • Arrival: before 18 February 2013
  • mandatory Welcome Week” starting 18 February 2013.

Students who have housing arranged via IRO Graz note that your dorm rooms are available starting 1 September (winter semester) and 5 February (summer semester). Make sure you arrange your arrival accordingly.

If you intend to arrive before your dorm room is available, you can always make arrangements at the youth hostel in Graz

HEALTH INSURANCE

  • All EU/EAA students need to bring their European health insurance card to Austria as it will be valid during their stay in Graz.
  • ALL ISEP students (1 and 2 semester stay) need to sign up for the ISEP MEDEX plan. However they do not sign up for full coverage with ISEP as the University of Graz requires all NON-EU students to sign up for Austrian health insurance. Austrian health insurance is offered for currently approx. €51/month including eye and dental coverage and medication during your stay in Graz. This insurance will not cover your journey to Graz including medical evacuation and repatriation – please make sure you purchase travel insurance accordingly.
  • ALL non-EU/EAA exchange students nominated for 2 semesters are required by law to register for Austrian health insurance upon arrival (assistance and more information available during the mandatory WELCOME WEEK). Austrian health insurance is offered for currently approx. €51/month including eye and dental coverage and medication during your stay in Graz. This insurance will not cover your journey to Graz including medical evacuation and repatriation – please make sure you purchase travel insurance accordingly.
  • Non-EU/EAA exchange students nominated for 1 semester are free to choose their insurance as long as this insurance is in accordance with the requirements for an Austrian visa application. For details please contact the Austrian embassy in your country of residence.

BUDDY PROGRAM

The International Section of the students union ( http://oehweb.uni-graz.at/international/) at the University of Graz organizes the so-called buddy program. Buddies are Austrian students interested in supporting international exchange students during their time in Graz (pick-up service, support in practical matters, etc.).

If you sign up for the program, please get in touch with your buddy as soon as you are provided with his/her contact details. Update both your buddy and your landlord/lady or dorm administration of any changes to your arrival dates.

ICOS – Intercultural Communication Sessions

Are offered before the beginning of every semester and will help you adapt to the new environment here in Graz. Participation is not mandatory but strongly advised. If you are interested, register as soon as possible as there is only a limited number of places available.
