Study performance

At the University of Graz, the study performance of the students is illustrated by semester hours ("Semesterstunden - SSt.") until the Accumulation System of ECTS will be completely developed and adopted. The "semester hours" designate the weekly contact hours per semester, which the students spend in courses with their teachers.

Additionally, ECTS credits were assigned to all study programmes.
As there are not yet sufficient evaluation results in regard to the workload of the students, ECTS credits were allocated to the single courses in relation to the entire study programme. Therefore it is possible that in some semesters, students do not reach the recommended 30 credits, but in others even more.

Additional information

  • The workload for the preparation of the diploma thesis was calculated 20-30 ECTS credits. As the students also attend courses during this time, the number of creditsfrom the individual courses they visit will be under 30 during these semesters.
  • The proportion of elective courses ("Wahlfächer") lies at about 40% of the whole study programme in many fields of study. Elective courses are generally assigned a low number of ECTS credits. Austrian students usually visit these courses together with compulsory courses, which are rated higher and have more credits. International exchange students, however, very often choose courses from the group of elective subjects only. This means that for a relatively high number of semester hours (weekly contact hours), the students only receive a comparatively low number of ECTS credits. Also, the estimated workload in elective courses is mostly lower, because of the already acquired knowledge and competencies in compulsory courses.
