The Department of English Studies (Institut für Anglistik) at the University of Graz offers programmes that either lead towards a general academic diploma (Diplomfach, comparable to an M.A.) or a teaching degree (Lehramt) as well as a doctorate (Dr. phil., PhD). These degree programmes are taught in cooperation with the Department of American Studies.
The course requirements include language, linguistics, literature and cultural studies and special teacher training courses for the teaching degree.
Research in literature focuses on theory of narrative, metafiction, reader-response theory, theory of drama, intermediality studies, Shakespeare studies, literature and performance, semiotic aspects of literature, comparative literature, and medieval studies. In linguistics, the areas of research include ecolinguistics, pragmatics, language of the media, corpus linguistics, cognitive neuroscience, diachronic and synchronic studies of English varieties, and applied linguistics and language teaching.
