Focus of Research

The section of Differential Psychology deals with different facets of giftedness, aptitude or talent from a neuroscientific perspective (supported by the “Fonds zur Förderung wissenschaftlicher Forschung”, FWF).

In this context, we build up on our former research projects dealing with physiological correlates of cognitive intelligence which have produced valuable insights into possible bases of individual differences in human intellectual abilities. However, recently, more and more emphasis is being laid on a broader and more comprehensive ability concept that not only focuses on “classical” intellectual abilities such as reasoning or logical-analytic thinking but includes free associative, divergent thinking processes (such as creativity), social, emotional and practical abilities as well.

On the basis of psychometric measurement methods specifically designed to assess different facets of social and emotional competencies as well as facets of practical intelligence we seek to explore neurophysiological correlates of different facets of human abilities. In our own EEG laboratory, high-resolution EEG with up to 64 channels is used to study spatio-temporal patterns of cortical activation during rest and performance of different cognitive tasks.
