Seggau Castle is located about 40km south of Graz, near the beautiful city of Leibnitz:

The Styrian castle Seggau stands on top of a small mountain over the city of Leibnitz, in the wine yards of southern Styria, Austria. This mountain is located on the northern spur of Frauenberg and was already settled in prehistoric and Roman times. From around 800AD the area belonged to the archbishopric Salzburg.
The first major expansion of the fortress, called Libnitz at the time, was initiated by Archbishop Konrad I in the first half of the 12th Century. In 1219, the old tower was given to the first Bishop of the newly founded Diocese Seckau. It was used as a living area. From the 13th Century onward, Salzburg possessions in Styria were administered in the rapidly growing fortress.
In 1595, the Archbishops gave the district Leibnitz-Seggau to the Bishop of Seckau. The head Bishop in Seckau during the Baroque era changed and built the fortress into a huge castle facility. The old tower was added onto twice and was turned into a clock tower in 1606. As building material they used, among other things, numerous ancient stones (2nd century AC) from the cemeteries of the Roman municipality Flavia Solva. In 1815, the 800 year-old tower had to be taken apart, due to serious damage caused by the heavy bells. In the upper stories of the tower, about 500 marble Roman era inscriptions and relief stones were obstructing the way. Most of these were not worn down and were still legible. From the best of these stones, a new facade was built in 1830/1832 in the upper castle using the example from the Vatican Lapidarium. It is now a show-wall and exhibition as well.
Nowadays the castle “Schloss Seggau” is famous for its high quality wines. The wines produced by the Bishop’s estate include almost all southern Styrian varieties and rank amongst the best in the Province, with numerous awards and distinctions to prove it (including several best-of-Province awards). Since the 1960th Schloss Seggau is well known as modern conference centre. |
